Design Challenge
  • The old Socialcast app was outdated, used old Socialcast branding, and had several UX issues.
  • All of the source files for the app were missing and there were no existing design specs.
  • Client feedback and Play Store store reviews were generally negative
02. Solution

By repackaging the Android app and rebuilding it from the ground up, we were able to address the existing UX issues and establish a design process for the mobile team. The business goals for this project were to bring the mobile app development in-house, achieve feature parity with the web application, improve usability issues, and update the old branding while updating the UI to the latest Android design guidelines.

Responsibilities
03. My Role & Responsibilities

For this project I was one of two mobile UI/UX designers. Working with the lead designer, we divided our work evenly and took ownership of the designs and deliverables for different sections of the app. My contributions were:

  • Planning features and tracking the app’s development
  • Conducting competitive research
  • Providing sketches, wires, interaction flows, and app prototypes
  • Creating high fidelity mocks, assets, and design specifications and documentation
  • Planning and conducting user testing sessions
  • Blog post announcing the app’s release
04. User Testing

We conducted two testing sessions over the course of the app’s development. The first was a very structured test of a high fidelity click-through prototype, and the second was a "guerrilla" test of a proof-of-concept application on a device.

05. Screen Comparisons (Before & After)

We conducted two testing sessions over the course of the app’s development. The first was a very structured test of a high fidelity click-through prototype, and the second was a "guerrilla" test of a proof-of-concept application on a device.

06. Release

The app was released in June 2014. I wrote a blog post to announce the release. The Play Store rating also slightly increased, going from a 3.2 to a 3.6 rating.
